Adventure with a Wide Gamut Monitor: Dell U2711

First post in AGES

I’ve seen enough grief online about wide gamut monitors and over/under-saturated reds. Well, here is what works for me in Win7.

1. DON’T use the color profile Dell included on the disk. Yes very counter-intuitive I know. Set the monitor to Adobe RGB.
2. Control Panel> Color Management > Add in Adobe RGB 1998 in the bottom pane of the first tab.
3. In the third tab, Device Profile > Adobe RGB 1998, and Viewing condition rules> WCS profile for ICC viewing conditions.
4. Go here, install, and then setup the plugin to use Adobe RGB. Opera is still my main browser
5. Setup your other color management capable programs to use the AdobeRGB and now most things should appear properly.

What happens when you use the Dell supplied monitor profile is that ARGB tagged pictures looks horrendously unsaturated in color managed programs. Setting it this way should let everything, including untagged and SRGB, to display correctly. I had it set up awhile ago, but didn’t feel like writing anything until someone prodded me for how to set it up correctly
